To commemorate the extraordinary legacy of the mathematical genius, Srinivasa Ramanujan, the Govt. of India has declared December 22 every year a National Day of Mathematics. This day is not only a tribute to the man who brought forth unparalleled contributions to the world of mathematics but also a celebration of the discipline that continues to shape our understanding of the universe.

Srinivasa Ramanujan, born on December 22, 1887, in Erode, Tamil Nadu, India, was a self-taught mathematician who left an indelible mark on the field with his intuitive insights and groundbreaking discoveries. His unparalleled ability to unravel complex mathematical truths without formal training has made him an inspiration for mathematicians worldwide.

On this day, let us not only honor Ramanujan's memory but also recognize the importance of mathematics as a cornerstone of scientific and technological progress. It is a day to inspire future generations to embrace the beauty of numbers, equations, and the limitless potential that lies within the world of mathematics. As we celebrate National Mathematics Day, let us reflect on Ramanujan's words, "An equation means nothing to me unless it expresses a thought of God." May this day serve as a source of inspiration for all those who venture into the intricate and fascinating world of mathematics, and may it ignite a passion for discovery and learning that transcends the boundaries of time and space.

As an annual feature, the Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir is organizing National Day of Mathematics in the month of December every year to honor the legendary mathematician S. Ramanujan. The objective of organizing this year’s National Day of Mathematics (Ramanujan Day) on December 22, 2023 is to establish a bridge between school education and higher education. The main aim of the programme is to provide an orientation-cum-awareness among the students of secondary level about the importance of mathematics. It is imperative to mention here that the admissions of students in Kashmir region are declining day by day in many important subjects since last couple of years and the enrolment of students opting for mathematics subject is also diminishing. In order to overcome this challenging issue, it is important to conduct counseling and enlightening sessions for the students and scholars by the eminent mathematicians and experts of the subject. We are hopeful that the deliberations on the life history and contributions of S. Ramanujan along with applications of mathematics can inspire young students to explore career options in mathematics. Students from various high and higher secondary schools of Kashmir region are expected to participate in the programme.
