3. National Mathematics Day-2023, Empower students to understand subject’s significance [Link]

To bridge the gap between school and higher education and to enlighten students about the significance of mathematics, the Department of Mathematics, Kashmir University (KU) in collaboration with the Jammu and Kashmir, Department of Science and Technology (JKDST) and Kashmir Mathematical Society (KMS) organised an orientation-cum-awareness programme to celebrate the National Mathematics Day here.
The National Mathematics Day is observed on December 22 each year to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great Indian mathematician, Srinivasa Ramanujan.
On the occasion, Dean Research, KU, Prof Irshad Ahmad Nawchoo, stressed on rejuvenating the idea of the role mathematics plays in everyday life.
“All subjects are equally important, however, parents, teachers and educational institutions need to educate young students of the subject’s significance and relevance,” he said, adding that the corelation between mathematical and physical sciences with that of social and biological sciences is phenomenal. Terming Mathematics as the father of all subjects, Dean, College Development Council, Prof Khursheed Ahmad Butt, said that to become relevant one needs to have a better understanding of mathematics as “without it we cannot excel in any field.” “If we commit ourselves and devote time and energy towards mathematics, it will become interesting and easy to understand,” he said, while referring to various kinds of phobias related to the subject. Dean, School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, University of Kashmir, Prof. Manzoor Ahmad Malik appreciated the Department of Mathematics for organizing the National Day of Mathematics-2023 and added that Mathematics adn other disciplines need proper attention, because such subjects play a pivotal role in the society. He further emphasized that students should get connected with the advanced technology to explore job opportunities. He also mentioned in his speech that the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences is ready to explore outreach programmes to have greater connectivity with the society. Underscoring the diminishing enrolment of students opting for mathematics, Head, Department of Mathematics, Prof Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday, said this day is not only a tribute to the man who brought forth unparalleled contributions to the world of mathematics but also a celebration of the discipline that continues to shape our understanding of the universe.“Let us not only honour Ramanujan’s memory but also recognise the importance of mathematics as a cornerstone of scientific and technological progress,” he said, adding that the deliberations on the life history and contributions of Srinivasa Ramanujan along with applications of mathematics can inspire young students to explore career options in mathematics. Additional Director, JKDST, Dr Nasir A Shah, said that mathematics is a universal language and that we need to change our mindset by adopting creative methodology and innovative techniques in teaching mathematics to young students. He also read a message on behalf of the Commissioner Secretary, DST, Saurabh Bhagat, urging all the stakeholders to empower young students to understand the significance and relevance of the subject. Prof. Fouzia S Qazi delivered a talk on "Circles, lines and other ways of thinking about them", Prof. MA Sofi, Visiting Professor NBHM JKIMS highlighted the importance of mathematics through his lecture "Unity themes in Mathematics-A sample of problems from elementary Geometry". In the afternoon session regarding the celebration of National Day of Mathematics, lecture on "Life history and contributions on S. Ramanujan" was delivered by Prof. MA Khanday. Dr. Maroof Ahmad Shah, Philospher and Veterinary Scientist, Lecturers, teachers delivered speech on the theme of the programme. More importantly, Students from various schools were given time to express their love and affection towards the subject through speechs.Organizing Secretary of the programme and Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematics, Dr M A Mir conducted the proceedings of the event.

At the end, Certificates among the participants were distributed by the Convener of the programme.

A. Govt. Higher Secondary School Srigufwara Anantnag (December 7, 2022)

An outreach programme aimed to popularise mathematics was organised by South Campus of the University of Kashmir at higher secondary school, Srigufwara, Anantnag.
The programme is part of a month-long campaign organised by the South Campus, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, J&K Government, to popularise the subject in secondary and senior secondary schools of Kashmir.
Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Zainapora Shopian, Mr Mushtaq Ahmad Lone was the chief guest on the occasion.
Urging the students to opt for mathematics, he said, “Being a student of mathematics has given me confidence to excel in life and undertake reasoning in the KAS and other competitive examinations.”
Director South Campus Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday delivered the keynote address on the ‘importance of mathematics and role of individuals’.
“Higher education needs to be connected with school education and South Campus has taken this initiative in that direction,” he said, adding that teachers, parents and students have to play an equal role to popularise mathematics and provide a supportive environment for learning the subject.
On the inaugural day, four technical sessions were conducted by Dr G Nabi Dar, faculty at Department of Physics KU and Dr Mohd Ibrahim, faculty at the Department of Mathematics, South Campus, besides Basharat Ahmad, Lecturer at GHSS, Salia, Anantnag, who threw light on career options for mathematics students across the country and abroad.
More than 150 students from 20 high and higher secondary schools, along with their escort teachers, participated in the programme.
Mohammad Shafi, Lecturer GHSS Srigufwara conducted proceedings of the event, while Principal GHSS Srigufwara, Mohammad Yousuf, delivered the vote of thanks.

B. Govt. Higher Secondary School BoysAnantnag (December 12, 2022)
 
Students from at least 15 secondary and senior secondary schools attended the second session of the ongoing Mathematics Popularisation Programme at Government Boys Model Higher Secondary School (GBMHSS), Anantnag. The month-long programme has been organised by the Department of Mathematics, South Campus University of Kashmir, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, J&K. Chief Education Officer Anantnag, Mr Khalil Ahmad graced the event as chief guest and congratulated the South Campus administration for reaching out to the education department with the mass awareness programme. It will certainly prove beneficial to inspire more students to opt for the subject at multiple levels, he said. Director South Campus Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday delivered the keynote address and spoke in detail about the role of mathematics in solving the problems that people face in their daily lives. “There is a rapid decline in students opting mathematics at the school level, thus becoming an impediment in producing future mathematicians,” he said, urging students to pursue mathematics for “better understanding of other subjects”. The escort teachers of the participating students, lecturers and officials from South Campus were present. Earlier, Sajad Ahmad, faculty, Department of Mathematics, South Campus and Convener of the event, outlined the rationale of the campaign. Principal of the School, Manzoor Ahmad, highlighted the importance of mathematics and its career opportunities. Three brainstorming sessions were conducted by Dr Aijaz Ahmad Najar, faculty at GDC Kulgam, Mr Basharat Hussain, Lecturer HSS Salia Anantnag and Mr Ali Mohammad Salroo.Mr Younis, Lecturer, GBMHSS Anantnag presented a vote of thanks and conducted the proceedings of the session.

C. Govt. Higher Secondary School Zainapora, Shopian (December 15,  2022)

The third session of the ongoing 'Popularisation of Mathematics' programme was held on Thursday at Government Higher Secondary School, Zainpora, Shopian. The programme, held as part of a month-long campaign, was organised by the Department of Mathematics, South Campus, in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Jammu and Kashmir. 130 students from several secondary and senior secondary schools of district Shopian participated in the programme along with their escort teachers. Director South Campus Dr Mukhtar A Khanday delivered a special lecture and highlighted the importance and beauty of mathematics in shaping the universe. He also spelt out the objective of conducting the awareness programme among students of various schools in Kashmir.  He said that a trending term "Mathophoba" has taken a toll on the mathematical understanding of the students.   Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Zainpora, who graced the occasion as guest of honour, said that people are using mathematics in their daily lives, from calculations to operating Android phones. He said there is a great need to augment the mathematical skills of students at school level. Earlier, Academic Coordinator, Department of Mathematics, South Campus, Dr. Feroz Ahmad Bhat presented a welcome address and gave a detailed account of the programme. He also delivered a lecture during a technical session. Four technical sessions were conducted by experts from Physics, Economics and Mathematics, including Dr Farooq Ahmad Sheikh, Head and Assistant Professor, GCW Nawakadal; Dr. Rameez Ahmad, Lecturer School Education and Dr. Basharat Hussain, Lecturer, Physics, School Education Department.  Principal GHSS, Zainpora delivered a vote of thanks while Mohammad Ahsan, a teacher at the school, conducted proceedings of the event.

D. Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School Rainawari (December 22,  2022)

 

University of Kashmir, South Campus held its fourth session of the ongoing ‘Popularisation of Mathematics’ programme at Government Girls Higher Secondary School, Rainawari, Srinagar, on Wednesday. Prof Tariq Ahmad Chishti, Director, Distance Education, KU, was chief guest on the occasion, who highlighted the role of mathematics in all spheres of life. He said that students should develop a taste for mathematics and understand its vast applications. He also complimented the Department of Mathematics, South Campus, for holding the month-long awareness programme in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Jammu and Kashmir. Director South Campus Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday, patron of the programme, delivered a special lecture on the importance of mathematics. He stressed on the need to connect the University with the school system through outreach programmes to make education “more effective” as envisaged in NEP-2020. Urging the students to not be afraid of mathematics, Dr Khanday said a young girl from Anantnag district is pursuing an advanced mathematics course at Chicago University, USA. Key speakers Dr Aasma Rafiq, Lecturer Mathematics, Higher Secondary School Gund, Ganderbal and Mr Shahbaz Hakbari, poet and former Lecturer Mathematics spoke about the importance and contributions of mathematics. They also highlighted the career opportunities in the subject. Principal GHS School Rainawara, Ms. Kawsar Jabeen, was also present on the occasion. Khursheed Ahmad and Ulfat from GHSS Rainawari conducted proceedings of the event, while Er Waseem Farooq, Assistant Programmer, South Campus, presented a vote of thanks. The event was attended by more than 100 students of adjoining schools along with their escort teachers. Students of classes 11th and 12th also presented their mathematical models.

E. Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School Sopore, Baramulla (December 24,  2022)

 

KU’s South Campus Anantnag in collaboration with Govt Boys Higher Secondary School Sopore and JK Department of Science and Technology organised programme on “Popularisation of Mathematics” and Celebration of National Day of Mathematics-2022 in North Kashmir on 24.10.2022. The fifth session of the lecture series was held on Saturday at Govt. Boys Higher Secondary School, Sopore, in which around 150 students from adjoining schools  of secondary and senior secondary schools of district Baramulla participated along with their escort teachers. Director South Campus, Prof. MA Khanday highlighted the objectives of organising awarness-cum- outreach programme and delivered a keynote lecture on “challenges and remedies of Mathemaics education in Kashmir division” and contributions of Indian genuous mathematician S. Ramanujan. The career opportunities in Mathematics along with scholarships available for the students opting mathematics was discussed by the speaker. He further urged participating students not to become prey of math phobia and assured them that mathematics can help in their overall personal development through imagination and reasoning capabilities. He added that if the phobia cannot be eradicated from the young minds, it will definitely make negative impact on our future generations. Dr. Khalid Nazir, Lecture Mathematics, Boys HS School Uri, Special guest deliverd a technical lecture on the importance and applications of mathematics. Abdul Rashid Dar, Former Professor of Mathematics Higher Education, along with his team of students welcomed the guests and other participants and conducted the proceedings. Principal Boys Higher secondary School, Sopore Mr. Abdul Rashid explicitly demonstrated the problems faced by students at school level and suggested that teachers as well as parents should help their students to overcome mathematical difficulties. Prof. Wali Mohmad Shah, Dean School of Physical and Chemical Sciences Central University of Kashmir has discussed the role of mathematics faternity in shapping the mathematics downfall, he appreciated the move and suggested that such programmes should be conducted on routine basis. Prof. B. A Zargar, Department of Mathematics KU highlighted the importance of mathematics and appreciated female students that they should opt mathematics as a challenge. Additional Deputy Commissioner Sopore, Ex- Chief Education Officers of Baramulla district, Civil Society members and Former Director North Campus Prof. Irshad Ahmad Wani also spoke on the occasion. A quiz programme “Koun Banega Champion-KBC of Mathematics 2022 at Govt Boys Higher Secondary school Sopore” was conducted among six groups shortlisted from hundreds of high and higher secondary schools of Baramulla district and students were awarded first, second and third prize by the experts based on their performance.

F. Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School Hall Pulwama (December 26,  2022, Venue: Govt Degree College, Pulwama)

    

KU’s South Campus Anantnag in collaboration with Govt Higher Secondary School Hawl, Pulwama and JK Department of Science and Technology organised programme on “Popularisation of Mathematics” in Pulwama district on 26.12.2022. The sixth session of the lecture series was held on Monday at Govt. Boys Degree College Pulwama, in which around 160 students from more than 20 High and Higher Secondary Schools of Pulwama district attended the programme along with their escort teachers. Additional District Development Commissioner Dr. Ab Aziz Sheikh was the Chief Guest, while as CEO Pulwama, Mr. Manzoor Ahmad Khan and Principal Govt. Higher Secondary School Hawl Pulwama, Mtr Nusrat Manzoor and Principal GDC Pulwama Prof. Haris Izhar Tantray were a Special/ guests of honouer on the occasion. Chief guest being a veterinary doctorate degree holder said that Statistics is a mandatory course in veterinary sciences and being a mathematics lover, he pursuaded his children to opt mathematics and later they had done B.Tech degrees. He further thanked director South Campus for organising such events in Pulwama district. Director South Campus, Prof. MA Khanday apprised the gathering about the month long activities conducted by the South Campus at various High and Higher Secondary Schools of Kashmir division and main objective of the awareness programme. He delivered a special lecture on the importance of mathematics in our real life situations and motivated students towards mathematics through animation based presentation. He futrther added that role of mathematics is in every discipline of science/humanities/social sciences etc. The various scheme available for mathematics student like Math Olympiad, NBHM fellowships, INSPIRE scheme etc were extensively discussed by the speaker. Our students have a great talent, however they need self confidence and motivation to pursue their career, Khanday said. Principal Higher secondary School Hawl, Mtr. Nursar Manzoor welcomed the guests and briefly presented the importance of mathematics awareness programmes among schools. Dr. Mohmad Ibrahim Mir, Assistant Professor South Campus delivered a technical lecture about understanding mathematical logic. Senior Mathematics lecturers like Mr. Jehangir Ahmad, Mr. Arshad Hassan (Organiser of the event), Mr. Mohamad Maqbool, Mr. Riyaz Ahmad along with students of various High/Higher Secondary schools extensively discussed about mathematical anxiety in students, remedies and importance of the subject. Chief Education officer proposed the vote of thanks and shared his experience about the subject and urged students to opt mathematics in order to make their future brighter. Mr. Aijaz Ashraf, Teacher of Govt Higher Secondary School Hawl conducted the proeceedings of the event.

G. Conclusion of awareness-cum-outreach events & Celebration of Mathematics Day-2022 at South Campus

The Department of Mathematics at South Campus of the University of Kashmir celebrated the National Mathematics Day-2022 as the final event of its collaborative month-long ‘Popularisation of Mathematics’ programme.The awareness-cum-outreach programme was held in collaboration with the Department of Science and Technology, Jammu and Kashmir. Director South Kashmir Dr Mukhtar A Khanday highlighted the contributions of great Indian mathematician, S. Ramanujan, and said that poverty and struggle didn’t stop Ramanujan from achieving the real goal of his life. “Students should draw inspiration from the contributions of S. Ramanujan,” he said, calling for “propagating positivity” about Mathematics in the society to improve enrollment of students in the subject.Dr Faroz Ahmad Bhat, Programme Convener, welcomed the guests and conducted the proceedings of the programme. Dr Shailesh Shirali, Director, Sahydri School, Pune was an invited speaker who delivered an online talk on “Applications of Euler formula in Graph theory”. In the last session, a mathematics quiz was organised for college students. The participating students from Govt Degree College (Boys), Anantnag and Govt College for Women Anantnag secured the first and second positions, respectively, and were later felicitated with books and certificates by the Director, South Campus. Dr M Iqbal Bhat, Dr M Ibrahim Mir, Dr Firdous Ahmad Shah and Dr Sajad Ahmad Parray, besides scholars of various departments were present. Mr Sajad Ahmad Sheikh proposed the vote of thanks.

Notably, the month-long programme was conducted from December 7, 2022, at Govt Boys Higher Secondary School Srigufwara Anantnag; Govt Boys Model School Anantnag; Govt Higher Secondary School Zainapora, Shopian; Govt Girls Higher Secondary School Rainawari, Srinagar; Govt Boys Higher Secondary School Sopore, Baramulla, and Govt Boys Degree College, Pulwama.

The Lab equipments of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics subjects were distributed today on July 1, 2021 among the following Schools by the Department.

3. Govt. Higher Secondary School Boys Budgam
4. Model Higher Secondary School Kreeri, Baramulla.

The meeting was attended by the faculty members of the Department, Deputy Director School Education, Staff of these Higher Secondary Schools etc.

14. 2-Day National Conference on Emerging Trends in Mathematics-Its Applications and Celebration of Mathematics Day

National Conference held at Kashmir University Mathematics Department

The inaugural session of the 2-Day National Conference on Emerging Trends in Mathematics-Its Applications and Celebration of Mathematics Day in collaboration with Department of Science and Technology, JK Government was held at the Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir on December 15, 2020 at 11.00AM. The Chief Guest of the event was the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof. Talat Ahmed and Registrar of the University Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir was the Special Guest. Prof. Talat Ahmed highlighted the role of mathematical modelling in other disciplines including life sciences, Geology, Geophysics and Climate Change etc. Prof. Talat Ahmed congratulated the Department for holding such activities for the benefit of research community. Dr. Nisar Ahmad Mir, Special Guest while appreciating the Departmental role in the field of research impressed that the subject mathematics makes all other disciplines simpler and mentioned that the teachers should play their role to make it popular and student friendly. He also assured full support for the development of the Department. Dr. Mukhtar Ah. Khanday, the organizing Secretary of the Conference started the proceedings and welcomed the guests in the beginning of the programme. Prof. B. A. Zargar, Convener and Head of the Department, highlighted the contributions of the faculty members and has emphasized the importance of organizing such events. The main aim of organizing this event is to expose the budding researchers and young faculty in the current and emerging areas of research. The invited speakers in the 2–Day National Conference on Emerging Trends in Mathematics-Its Applications and Celebration of National Day scheduled during December 15-16, 2020 include Prof. Daniel Breaz, Romania, Prof. CS Rajan and Prof. Amitave Battacharya from TIFR, Prof. PG Siddheshwar, Bangalore, Prof. AP Singh and Prof. M.A. Sofi, Former Dean Academics of the University will enlighten the participants in different fields of research during the Conference.  Also, Dr. MA Khanday will present life history and some contributions of a great Indian Mathematician S. Ramanujan on the National Day of Mathematics. In view of the adherence of COVID-19 guidelines in vogue only 30 participants were selected offline and other’s participants are joining through online mode. It was the first conference in the Department. which was both online as well as offline. Prof. M.A. Sofi, Prof. S. Pirzada, Prof. M.H.Gulzar, Prof. M.Abdullah, Prof. Tariq Cheshti, Prof. Tariq Shikari and many others attended the inaugural session offline and a good number of participants and guest attended online.

 Outcome of the 2-Day National Conference deliberations

The National Conference on Emerging Trends in Mathematics -Its Applications and Celebration of Mathematics Day in collaboration with Department of Science and Technology, JK Government, concluded on December 16, 2020 at the Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir.

 The Conference was well attended by a good number of participants both online and offline, the participants other than faculty and research scholars of our own University were from AMU; Anamalaye University, Tamil Nadu; TIFR Mumbai, Bangalore University, Amity University; BGSB University, Rajouri; Central University of Kashmir; Faculty members of various colleges etc. The overall response was quite appreciable.

The 2-Day event started with a talk on Combinatorics by Prof. Amitava Bhattacharya (TIFR Mumbai) followed by a lecture entitled “Some univalent criteria for Integral operators” by a world-renowned mathematician Prof. Daniel Breaz from Romania.

On 2nd day of the Conference, Dr. MA Khanday, Associate Professor of the Department  delivered an inspirational talk on the life history and contributions of S. Ramanujan on the Celebrations of National Day of Mathematics. He has given detailed information about his level of intelligence and his recognition at International level under hard circumstances. He suggested that, we all should follow the quote of Ramanujan “An equation has no meaning to me unless it expresses a thought of God” to identify the applications of mathematics in our day today life situations.

Prof. MA. Sofi delivered an important talk entitled “Social Distancing – A Mathematical Perspective” , the lecture was relevant with the current crisis of COVID-19 pandemic.

The talk entitled “Additive eigenvalue problem and representation theory” was presented by Prof. C.S. Rajan of TIFR Mumbai.

In the afternoon session, Prof. PG Siddheshwar, enlighted the participants by making some innovative ideas when he talked on the topic “How to extract physics from the MATHEMATICS that I know?”, it was a nice lecture to perceive the beauty of mathematics under real life situations.

The title “On Bungee sets of transcendental entire functions” was highlighted by Prof. AP Singh, Former Vice Chancellor, Central University Rajasthan. He has discussed complex dynamic systems with beautiful illustrations.

About 15 papers on different themes were presented in the paper presentation sessions.
