Today on June 22, 2023, Professor Rajendra Kumar Sharma, faculty from the Department of Mathematics, IIT Delhi, has delivered an extension lecture in the Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir on the topic "Little m equal to capital M". The lecture was attended by the faculty members, scholars and students of the Department. Prof. MA Sofi, former Head & Dean Academics has also attended the department.
Head, Department of Mathematics, Prof. Mukhtar Ahmad Khanday introduced the guest speaker and briefly discussed the importance of the topic in our daily life. He further emphasised about the relevance of these lectures in a way that these lecture are beyond the conventional classroom lectures. Such lectures not only provide a platform to the students to interact with the speakers of great repute, but also can nourish their teaching and research skills.
The speaker deliberated upon the importance of cryptography and coding theory in day today situations. It is pertinent to mention here that securing information through encryption and decryption scheme is one of the leading research area these days. The role of mathematics in securing sensitive information was discussed by the guest speaker. He further interacted with the students and encouraged them to play with the problems of cryptography. The simple problems of mathematics- (little-m) were demonstrated to make life comfortable through Money- (capital-M). The lecture was very interesting and all the participants enjoyed it.
Finally, the Head, on behalf of the mathematics department thanked the guest for delivering a wonderful lecture.
