A week-long national-level workshop on Mathematics and Its Applications at the University of Kashmir
KU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Khurshid Iqbal Andrabi, inaugurated the workshop organised by the University’s Department of Mathematics in collaboration with the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM), Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India.
In his address, Prof Andrabi stressed on the importance of mathematical tools in other disciplines.
Citing an example, he said, understanding oxygen binding with hemoglobin is not possible without having a good knowledge of mathematics.
He urged upon teachers and scholars of mathematics to help inculcate the urge for studying the subject, among young students.
In his welcome address, Dr M A Khanday, Organizing Secretary of the workshop, highlighted the importance of mathematics and the role of teachers in making the subject interesting. He referred to application of mathematical tools in solving problems in subjects of natural sciences, engineering, medicine, finance and social sciences.
Prof S Pirzada, Head of the Mathematics department, gave a detailed description of events conducted by the department from time to time. He appreciated the support of Vice-Chancellor for the departmental activities.
Prof V K Kukreja from SLIET Longowal; Prof Peeyush Chandra from IIT Kanpur; Prof B K Das from Delhi University and Prof Krishnan from TIFR Mumbai are expected to deliver lectures during the workshop.
The objective of the workshop is to expose students and researchers to understand the role of mathematics, Dr Khanday said.
