Kashmir University’s Mathematics Department conducted 4th Phase of School Outreach Programme in Pulwama District
November 28, 2024: The Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir, Srinagar in collaboration with Kashmir Mathematical Society (KMS), JK Science Technology & Innovation Council organized 4th phase of Awareness-cum-outreach Programme for the popularization of mathematics to the high/higher secondary students of Pulwama district at Govt. Higher Secondary School Hawal Pulwama. Over 100 students/teachers from various High/Higher Secondary School of Kulgam district participated in the programme.
The program was aimed to develop the interest of students towards the essence and applications of mathematics at School level for the improvement of student’s enrolment in mathematics and other basic science course at senior secondary and college level. The program was organized to inspire & create interest among students towards mathematics. Speaking on the occasion Chief Guest of the Inaugural session Prof. MH Gulzar, Former HOD Mathematics, UoK has extensively discussed the role of mathematics in our real life situations. The Convener of the programme Prof. MA Khanday emphasized that for the individual growth and for the development of the country, it is important to have quality mathematicians at elementary level. Dr. Khanday added that, the quality curriculum and engagement of adequate specialized teachers in the education sector at primary and middle level to train student about the conceptual and experiential learning of the subject should be the priority of the government. In his technical session, he has further demonstrated various fellowships and Career related schemes for students opting basic science subjects.
Dr. Muzafar Rasool, Department of Computer Sciences, IUST delivered a lecture and extensively demonstrated the role of Mathematics in AI and Data Science. He has mentioned in his lecture highlighted that mathematics is the backbone of technology. The root cause of math phobia among students is due to various factors including negative perception of parents, society members and teachers outdated and ineffective pedagogy.
Prof. Mushtaq Ali Mir, Ex. Principal GDC Pulwama; CEO Pulwama, Mr. Manzoor A Khan; ZEO Pulwama Mtr. Shaista Drabu; Principal, GHSS Hawal Mtr. Nusrat Manzoor were Guests of Honour in the Programme. They shared their experiences and highlighted the importance of the subject in every sphere of life and for the development of the society.
The Vice Principal and Sr. Lecturer Mathematics, GHSS Hawal Mr. Arshad H Wani discussed some interesting formulae in the session and also presented vote of thanks.
A panel discussion on the theme “Current Scenario of Mathematics education in Pulwama district: Challenges and Remedies” among experts, escort teachers and students was held in the last session. Mr. Aijaz Ashraf, Teacher, GHSS Hawal conducted the proceedings of the programme.
