Awareness cum outreach programme for the students of Kulgam district on 16.11.2024 at DIET Kulgam



The Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir, Srinagar in collaboration with JK Science Technology and Innovation Council & Kashmir Mathematical Society (KMS) is organising a series of events at various Schools/Colleges/Universities of Kashmir region during October to December 2024. The main aim of these events is to develop the interest of students towards mathematics at Higher Secondary School level, which in turn can improve the enrolment of students in mathematics at Higher Education.
It is pertinent to mention here that, Kashmir region has witnessed drastic decline of student’s enrolment in basic science courses like Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Electronics, Statistics, and more importantly in Mathematics after qualifying 10th due to unknown reasons. For the larger interest of the society and to overcome this challenge, the faculty members of the Department of Mathematics and office bearers of the Kashmir Mathematical Society joined hands together to organise awareness-cum-outreach programmes for 9th and 10th standard students at different district headquarters of Kashmir region.
The first phase of the porgramme was organized in the Bandipora district at Govt. Girls Higher Secondary School Bandipora on October 11, 2024, in which over 120 students from various schools of the district participated.
Second phase of the programme is scheduled in the district Budgam on November 2, 2024 at DIET Budgam. Around 150 students from various High/Higher Secondary Schools of the district are participated in the programme.
For the awareness of students of Kulgam district, the Department of Mathematics in collaboration with DIET Kulgam has scheduled an event on November 16, 2024 in which we are expecting students along with their escort teachers of about 10-15 high/higher secondary schools are participating.
We are hopeful that the interaction of participants with experts will definitely help our young generation to shape their career in the subject.

Report of the Programme:

Kashmir University’s Mathematics Department conducted 3rd Phase of School Outreach Programme in Kulgam District
November 16, 2024: The Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir, Srinagar in collaboration with Kashmir Mathematical Society (KMS), JK Science Technology & Innovation Council and DIET Kulgam, organized 3rd phase of Awareness-cum-outreach Programme for the popularization of mathematics to the high/higher secondary students of district Kulgam at DIET Kulgam. The main aim of the programme was to apprise the students about the Importance of Mathematics and its real life applications. Over 150 student/teacher participants from various High/Higher Secondary School of Kulgam district attended the programme.
To overcome the phobia of mathematics among school students, this program was organized to inspire & create interest among students towards mathematics. Speaking on the occasion Chief Guest of the Inaugural session Prof. MA Khanday, HOD Mathematics, highlighted the importance and impact of these awareness programmes at various districts of Kashmir regions and briefed the participants about the objectives of the programme. In the technical session Prof. Khanday highlighted the role of teachers, students, parents and policy makers in eradicating the fear of mathematics and comprehensively discussed the career opportunities at School and College level for the students opting the subject. He further emphasized that teachers should develop student centric classroom environment and engage students in discussions and focus on technology based teaching learning pedagogy. Policy makers can help the nation by adopting the model of developed countries for the overall growth of the subject and there is no doubt that good mathematicians can lead the nation in economy, technology and other emerging fields. It is essential to recruit adequate subject specialized teachers for the growth of mathematics at elementary, secondary and senior secondary school level, Khanday added. Mtr. Rifat Sarosh, Principal DIET Kulgam appreciated the Department of Mathematics for organizing the program at DIET and discussed the role of their Institute in education sector. Mr. Arshad Hasaan Wani, Sr. Lecturer Mathematics (Co Convener) of the program welcomed the guests and discussed some teaching experiences with the students and also presented vote of thanks. Dr. Aijaz Ahmed Najar, Assistant Professor, GDC Boys, Anantnag delivered a lecture on applications of mathematics, Dr. Umar, Mathematics Tutor of South Kashmir, and others spoke on various aspects of mathematics education and associated grass root level problems. A special guest Shah Abdullah Hammaad- Child Prodigy, a class 4th student from Arwani Bijbehara has expressed his interest towards mathematics and physics. He inspired the participating students by means of having understanding of these subjects beyond the level of class 11th and 12th and suggested the students to solve mathematical problems like a puzzle to make it more interesting. Escort teachers and students made their view points about the programme and the teachers/students from various schools demonstrated their mathematical models.
In the valedictory session, Mr. Mushtaq Rasool, ACR Kulgam (Guest of Honor) having Mathematics background extensively discussed the relevance of these programmes and deliberated on the importance of the subject in creative thinking. He complemented the organizers for developing interest among students of every corner of Kashmir. Mr. Bashir Ahmad Lone, General Manager District Industries Centre, Kulgam (Guest of Honor) also spoke about the role of Mathematics in personality development and application point of view.
Mr. Shahnawaz Ahmad, Lecture Physics was the local coordinator and Mr. Parveiz Ahmad Mir, DIET Kulgam conducted the proceedings.
