Report on

Programme on Mathematical Modeling of Biological Systems at Kashmir University Concluded

A 3-Day Lecture Programme on Mathematical Modelling of Biological Systems has been organized by the Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir, Srinagar in collaboration with National Network for Mathematical and Computational Biology-Mohali Node during April 2-4, 2015. The Vice Chancellor Prof. K. I. Andrabi was the chief guest of the Inaugural session in which he highlighted the importance of mathematics in life sciences. He accepted that the life scientists face lot of difficulties in teaching and in research while dealing with mathematical concepts. Dr. M. A. Khanday, Convener of the programme welcomed the guests and highlighted the relation among mathematics and biology. Due to the wide diversity of specific knowledge involved, bio-mathematical research is often done in collaboration between mathematicians, theoretical biologists, physicists, chemists, engineers, life scientists etc. Mathematical and theoretical biology is an interdisciplinary scientific research field with a range of applications in biology, biotechnology, medicine etc. Mathematical biology aims at the mathematical representation, treatment and modeling of biological processes, using a variety of applied mathematical techniques and tools. The main aim to organize this 3-Day lecture programme was to expose the young researchers in the area of  biomathematics. Prof. Somdatta Sinha IISER Mohali spoke on the activities of NNMCB at National level. Prof. S. Pirzada, HOD, Mathematics gave the brief introduction about the departmental profile since its inception in 1958. Prof. S. Javid, Dean Research, University of Kashmir presented the concluded remarks of the programme.

The eminent speakers include Prof. Philip Maini, Oxford University, UK; Prof. G. Jayaraman, The University of West Indies, Jamica; Prof. VP Saxena, Former Vice Chancellor Jiwaji University; Prof. Somdatta Sinha, IISER, Mohali & Co-Convener of the programme; Prof. Joydev Chattopdhayay, ISI Kolkata; Prof. KR Pardasani, MANIT Bhopal; Prof. S. Pirzada and Prof. B. A. Ganai, University of Kashmir; Dr. Sandeep Krishna, NCBS Bangalore; Dr. Seema Nanda, TIFR Bangalore; Dr. R. R. Sarkar, NCL Pune; Dr. N. Bairagi, Jadavpur University Kolkata; Dr. Neeru Adlakha, SVNIT Surat; Dr. Tariq Raja, SKUAST Kashmir delivered Plenary/Invited talks on the topics; models on cellular biology, mathematical ecology, mathematical physiology and biomechanics, bioinformatics, computational biology, graph theory and cancer gene networks, modelling enzyme kinetics, statistical tools for biologists and mathematical epideomology.

More than fifty five young researchers and faculty  members from different Institutes of the  country attended the programme.

Workshop on Naïve Set Theory begins at Mathematics Department Kashmir University

A 3-Week long Advanced Instructional School (AIS) on “Naïve Set Theory and Its Applications-2015” from April 13-May 02, 2015, jointly organized by the Department of Mathematics, University of Kashmir and National Centre for Mathematics (NCM-TIFR Mumbai) was inaugurated today at EMMRC Auditorium, University of Kashmir Srinagar. Prof. Sheikh Javid, Dean Research who was the Chief guest on this occasion, highlighted the role of mathematics in other disciplines including especially in Physics. Dr. Mukhtar Ah. Khanday, started the proceedings and welcomed the guests in the beginning of the programme. The Convener of the School Prof. M. A. Sofi while deliberating on the need for organizing such schools on a regular basis bemoaned the short shrift being shown towards teaching in the Colleges and Universities of the country. He further said that it was mainly with a view to address this problem that such schools are being organized regularly throughout the country. Prof. S. M. Shrivastava from ISI Kolkata also spoke on the occasion and emphasized the need to organize more and more such schools and workshops in the J&K State. The HOD, Mathematics Prof. S. Pirzada spoke on the occasion and gave a detailed profile of the activities of the Department since its inception in 1958. The list of speakers who are expected to be available during the school includes some distinguished mathematicians from certain Centres of excellence in Mathematics including Prof. B. V. Rao, Prof. M.G. Nadkarni, Prof. S. Gangopdhyay, Prof. H. Sarbadhikari, Prof. Rana Barua and Prof. Sreela Gangopadhyay. A number of participants from different states shall be participating in the workshop including an equal number of them working in various Colleges and Universities from within the J&K state. Dr. B. A. Zargar and Dr. M. A. Mir were also present and the function concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. M. H. Gulzar.
